Reply Rate
Reply rate is the share of recipients who send any reply to a campaign or thread, expressed as a percentage of delivered messages. With raw open rates contaminated by Apple MPP and corporate scanners since 2021, reply rate has become the cleanest single engagement signal for cold outbound in 2026.
Reply rate is one of the few engagement metrics that machines cannot fake. A pixel fires from any pre-fetcher. a click fires from any link scanner. but a reply requires a human, in a mail client, typing words. That makes reply rate the most trustworthy outbound metric in 2026.
How to calculate
Reply rate = unique replying recipients / delivered messages × 100. Most cold-outbound platforms compute this automatically. Filter for genuine replies (exclude out-of-office bounces, auto-responders, unsubscribe confirmations) to get a clean number.
What counts as good
Cold-outbound benchmarks in 2026, based on aggregated tool reports:
- Below 1 percent: list quality, targeting, or message problem
- 1-3 percent: typical for unrefined cold lists
- 3-8 percent: good. tight targeting, relevant message
- 8-15 percent: excellent. highly tailored, warm referral, or replies-include-NOs counted
- Above 15 percent: warm intro territory or counting OOO replies in the numerator
Warm-list or 1-to-1 outbound has materially higher rates. 20 to 40 percent is realistic on a well-targeted partner-referral list.

Frequently asked questions
Should OOO replies count?+
No. Out-of-office and bounce auto-responders inflate the rate without indicating intent. Outsolvi's reply detection classifies auto-responders separately so they do not pollute the rate.
What about negative replies?+
Counting negative replies (\"not interested\") in the rate is correct, but the rate alone is then misleading. Pair reply rate with reply-sentiment breakdown for the actionable view.
