Open Rate Accuracy Checker
Takes your reported open rate and the composition of your recipient list, and estimates what the real human-read rate is after filtering MPP pre-fetches, Gmail proxy duplicates, and corporate-scanner traffic.
Applies the typical inflation factors per recipient-type segment (MPP ~30 percentage points, Gmail proxy ~10-15, corporate scanners ~20) to estimate the real rate. Output is a range because exact numbers depend on list composition.
When your reported open rate doesn't match your reply rate (e.g., 70% opens with 8% replies suggests inflation). The real-rate estimate aligns the metrics.
How to use it
- 1Enter your reported open ratePull from your current tracker's dashboard.
- 2Specify list compositionApproximate % iPhone users, % Gmail web users, % corporate addresses.
- 3Read the real-rate rangeTool outputs a low/high band — your true human-read rate falls inside it.
Common use cases
- •Sanity-checking a campaign that 'over-performed' on opens
- •Justifying a tool switch by quantifying current measurement error
- •Calibrating sequence-stop thresholds based on real engagement, not inflated metric
FAQ
Why is reply rate the cleaner side-by-side signal?+
Reply rate depends on the human actually engaging, so it survives the open-tracking distortion. Open rate is contaminated by MPP, Gmail proxy, and scanners; reply rate is not.
What inflation factor should I use for a corporate-heavy list?+
Higher. Corporate email scanners (Microsoft Defender, Mimecast, Proofpoint) often pre-open every link and image as part of security scanning. Add 15-25 percentage points of inflation on top of the MPP/Gmail baseline for any list that's 50%+ enterprise recipients.
Will my real rate ever look 'good' again?+
Yes — once you measure correctly. A real 25% human-read rate on cold outbound is excellent; teams reporting 65% inflated rates often have 20-30% real rates, which is the actual industry top quartile. Calibrating expectations matters as much as fixing the measurement.
