How to send automatic follow-up emails in Gmail when someone doesn't reply

Last reviewed September 16, 2026

Gmail will sometimes tell you to follow up. It won't do it for you. Nudges bring an old sent email back to the top of your inbox with a prompt, but you still have to write the follow-up and send it, and Gmail only nudges on emails it picks.

This guide shows how to turn nudges on if a prompt is all you need, and how to set a follow-up that sends automatically from your Gmail account, arrives as a reply in the same thread, and cancels itself if the person answers first.

Before you start

  • Gmail or Google Workspace in Google Chrome (other Chromium browsers are untested)
  • The Outsolvi Chrome extension installed, for follow-ups that send automatically
  • Your Gmail account connected to Outsolvi, so it can send the follow-up from your mailbox and see replies

Step-by-step

  1. 1

Turn on nudges if a prompt is enough

In Gmail on a computer, open Settings, go to the General tab, find Nudges and check Suggest emails to follow up on. Gmail will then surface some sent emails at the top of your inbox. It suggests; it never sends.

  2. 2

Send the original email with tracking on

Send your email from Gmail with the Outsolvi extension tracking it. The follow-up attaches to that tracked email, so it replies in the right thread and knows which reply should cancel it.

  3. 3

Open the sent email and choose Schedule follow-up

Open the email from Sent, find the Outsolvi panel on the message, and select Schedule follow-up. The follow-up form opens right there in Gmail.

  4. 4

    Write the follow-up

Add a subject and a message. Give them a simple reason to reply, like one question or a proposed time. Short follow-ups that ask for one thing get answered more often than long recaps.

  5. 5

    Pick when it sends

Under Send after, choose 1 day, 3 days, 1 week or 2 weeks after the original email.

  6. 6

    Choose Auto-send or a prompt

Auto-send (recommended) sends it for you when it's due. Notify me to send manually prompts you instead, if you'd rather check it before it goes.

  7. 7

    Let it stop on reply

If they reply before the follow-up is due, Outsolvi cancels the remaining follow-ups for that email, so you don't chase someone who has already answered.

Troubleshooting

There's no Schedule follow-up option on the email

It appears on emails sent with Outsolvi tracking. Emails sent before the extension was installed, or from a browser where it isn't running, have no tracked thread to reply into.

Nudges setting is missing

Check the General tab in Settings on a computer; on the iPhone and iPad app it's under Settings, Inbox customizations, Nudges. If you still don't see it, your Workspace admin or account type may not offer it.

The follow-up still sent after they replied

Check whether they wrote back in a new email instead of replying to yours, or from another address. A reply outside the thread may not be matched to the original, so the follow-up can still go out.

Frequently asked

Does Gmail have automatic follow-ups?

No. Nudges suggest sent emails you may need to follow up on, and schedule send can send a message later, but Gmail has nothing that sends a follow-up because someone didn't reply.

Does the follow-up come from my Gmail account?

Yes. Outsolvi sends it through your connected Gmail or Google Workspace account as a reply in the same thread, so it looks like you sent it by hand. During a trial it ends with a short "Sent with Outsolvi" line.

What does connecting my Gmail account give Outsolvi?

The ability to send follow-ups from your account and to see replies so it can stop them. That sync includes recent mail, content included, stored encrypted at rest. The follow-ups you write are stored too, so they can be sent later.

Can I check a follow-up before it sends?

Yes. Choose Notify me to send manually and Outsolvi prompts you when it's due instead of sending it.

Nate built Outsolvi after watching every email-tracking tool he had ever used lie to him about opens. Outsolvi grades every open as a person or a machine, in Outlook and Gmail, so the number on the dashboard is one a rep can actually act on.
