Apple Mail Rendering Differences

Apple Mail makes up 50%+ of B2C and 25%+ of B2B opens. Rendering differences from Gmail/Outlook are real and worth knowing.

Apple Mail-specific behaviors
Mail Privacy ProtectionPre-fetches all images server-side; opens fire ~immediately for ALL recipients regardless of actual open. Open-rate metric is broken for Apple users without confidence-aware tracking.
Image proxyApple proxies images through their own infrastructure when MPP is enabled. IP geolocation is unreliable.
Dark modeAuto-inverts light backgrounds. Use the @media (prefers-color-scheme: dark) media query to control inversion.
Web fontsApple Mail supports web fonts via @font-face in macOS Mail but not in iOS Mail (uses system font fallback).
AMP for EmailNot supported. Apple Mail renders the HTML fallback.
CSS supportAmong the best of major clients. supports flexbox, grid, animations. Outlook-tier compromise not needed for Apple-only audiences.
Link inspectionLong-press on iOS shows the destination URL. Tracking-link redirect chains look suspicious in this UI.

FAQ

Why does Apple Mail matter so much for email metrics?+

Mail Privacy Protection pre-fetches images on Apple's servers, so an open can fire without the person ever looking at the message. If a big share of your list is on Apple Mail, your raw open rate is measuring pre-fetches as much as people.

Does this page test how my email looks in Apple Mail?+

No. It's a reference table of known behaviors: MPP, image proxying, dark mode inversion, web font support, AMP, CSS support, and link inspection. To see your actual template you still need a real device or a rendering-preview service.

Do I need to build to Outlook's limits if my audience is Apple-heavy?+

Not usually. Apple Mail has some of the best CSS support of the major clients, including flexbox and grid. The table-based fallbacks exist mainly for Outlook desktop's Word renderer.
